Advent. The quiet, eager anticipation of the birth of Our Lord. Simple activities that prepare our hearts and minds for the miracle of Christmas Day.
How I wish! Advent in my corner of the world is anything but simple, quiet or peaceful.
I’ve heard the advice many times: Do less! And there is good counsel in that. But perhaps the number of my activities is not so much the problem as the anxious heart I bring to them all. So this year I am going to take my Advent motto from St. Paul’s Letter to the Colossians (3:23): “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” If I can focus on Him, more than “them,” I trust a peaceful heart will take its place at the center of all my preparations.
I hope you’ll join me for this Advent reflection so that on Christmas Day we’re ready to “hear the angels sing”!
