The evOLve Adult Education Ministry is excited to welcome Jim Kenney, Executive Director of Common Ground, an adult education center in Deerfield, Illinois.
In this presentation, Jim will trace the essential lines of Thomas Merton’s long inquiry into Buddhist thought and spiritual practice. Along the way, we will glance at his correspondence and meeting with the great Zen Buddhist sage, D.T. Suzuki. Then we will talk about his encounter with the Vietnamese Buddhist teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh. Finally, we’ll explore his rich interaction with His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. How important was Buddhism to Thomas Merton? The question is central to modern interreligious understanding.
